Contact forms, SEO tools, caching, and security are all typically handled by plugins.

The original guide described two methods, but both started with “download the plugin to your computer”, which blurred the difference between them. In practice, the easiest way is to install straight from the WordPress plugin directory with no download at all. This version separates the methods properly and adds the safety checks and troubleshooting that were missing.

Prerequisites

Before you install WordPress plugins, make sure you have:

A WordPress site and an Administrator login

A recent backup, if this is a live site

SFTP access, only if you plan to use Method 3

Architecture

Every plugin lives in its own folder inside
wp-content/plugins
on your server

WordPress scans that folder and lists whatever it finds on the Plugins page

Installing puts the files there. Activating records the plugin as active in the database, and WordPress then loads its PHP code on every page request

The diagram below shows what happens when you install WordPress plugins by any method. They all end up in the same folder:

Steps to Install WordPress Plugins

Method 1: Install from the WordPress Plugin Directory (Easiest)

This is the method to use for any plugin listed in the official WordPress plugin directory. You don’t need to download anything first.

In your WordPress admin area, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin (labelled just Add New in older versions)

Type the plugin’s name into the search box

Find the right result and click Install Now

When the button changes, click Activate

Method 2: Upload a WordPress Plugin ZIP File

The second way to install WordPress plugins is to upload a WordPress plugin as a ZIP file. Use this for premium plugins or anything that isn’t in the directory.

Download the plugin as a
.zip
file to your computer. Don’t unzip it

Go to Plugins → Add New Plugin and click Upload Plugin at the top

Click Choose File, select the ZIP, and click Install Now

Click Activate Plugin

Note: The original guide left out the final activation step for this method. A plugin that’s installed but not activated does nothing.

Method 3: Install WordPress Plugins Manually over SFTP or WP-CLI

To install WordPress plugins manually, use this method when the dashboard upload fails (for example, because of a file size limit) or you prefer the command line.

Over SFTP:

Unzip the plugin on your computer

Connect to your server with an SFTP client

Upload the plugin’s folder into
wp-content/plugins/

In the dashboard, go to Plugins and click Activate next to it

With WP-CLI, if it’s installed on your server:

wp plugin install plugin-slug --activate

Replace
plugin-slug
with the plugin’s directory name. See the WP-CLI plugin install documentation for more options.

Choosing Plugins Safely

A plugin runs with full access to your site, so a bad one can take it over. Before you install WordPress plugins from any source, check:

Last updated: avoid plugins that haven’t been updated in a long time

Active installations and reviews: widely used plugins with recent, positive reviews are safer bets

Compatibility: the plugin page shows which WordPress version it was tested with

The source: install from the official WordPress plugin directory or a vendor you trust. Avoid “nulled” (pirated) copies of premium plugins, which commonly contain malware

Also delete plugins you no longer use, rather than just deactivating them, and keep the ones you do use updated.

Troubleshooting

If you can’t install WordPress plugins from the dashboard, check these first:

No Upload Plugin button, or installs are blocked: your account may not be an Administrator, or on multisite only super admins can install plugins. Some hosted plans restrict plugin installs, and
DISALLOW_FILE_MODS
set to
true
in
wp-config.php
also blocks them

“The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive”: your PHP upload limit is too small. Raise it, or use Method 3

“Could not create directory” or “Installation failed”: the web server can’t write to
wp-content/plugins
. Check the folder’s ownership and permissions

“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error”: the plugin is usually incompatible with your PHP or WordPress version, or conflicts with another plugin. Check its requirements on the plugin page

Site shows a white screen after activating a plugin: connect over SFTP and rename that plugin’s folder inside
wp-content/plugins
(for example, add
.off
to the end). WordPress deactivates it automatically, and the site should come back

Conclusion

To install WordPress plugins, use the WordPress plugin directory for most plugins, a ZIP upload for premium or custom ones, and SFTP or WP-CLI when the dashboard won’t cooperate. Whichever method you use, remember to activate the plugin afterward, take a backup first on a live site, and only install plugins from sources you trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to unzip the file before I upload a WordPress plugin? No. Upload the
.zip
file exactly as downloaded for Method 2. Only unzip it if you’re copying the folder over SFTP.

Does installing a plugin also activate it? No. After installing, you must click Activate before the plugin does anything.

Can I install WordPress plugins on WordPress.com? It depends on your plan. Some WordPress.com plans don’t allow custom plugins at all, while higher tiers do. On a self-hosted WordPress site, you can always install plugins if you have Administrator access.

Is it safe to install WordPress plugins from outside WordPress.org? It can be, if the source is a reputable vendor you trust. Avoid nulled copies and unknown download sites, since malware is common there.

Related Articles

How to Deploy WordPress Behind a Reverse Proxy on cPanel/Apache

How to Install reCAPTCHA in WordPress

Talk to Our Technology Experts

Need help choosing, installing, or troubleshooting WordPress plugins?
