Introduction

Updating the IPMI firmware ensures that the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) is running the latest firmware version with the latest fixes, improvements, and security updates. This guide explains how to upgrade the IPMI firmware on a Supermicro motherboard using the IPMI web interface.

Prerequisites

  • Access to the Supermicro IPMI web interface
  • IPMI administrator credentials
  • The correct firmware package for the motherboard model
  • Stable network connectivity to the IPMI interface
  • ipmicfg utility installed on the operating system (recommended)

Implementation

1. Log in to the IPMI interface from the browser. You can use the IPMIVIEW tool to log in to the interface as well.

2. In IPMI, move to Maintenance > Firmware Update.

Download the firmware version from the Supermicro page. You must look for the motherboard version and download the firmware accordingly.

Select the downloaded firmware version and click on Upload Firmware.

Make sure that the option “Preserve Configuration” is ticked. Check the existing version and the new version. Once everything looks good, click on Start Upgrade.

Wait till the upgrade process reaches 100%. The IPMI will be automatically rebooted after the upgrade and will be available to log in.
